Birth of a Book: Author Interview Series III

BYE SWEETHEART! by Dhanush Kumar

Novel

Q) What inspired you to write this book? Was it a person, an idea, or a specific moment in your life or a little bit of everything.

A: Actually, at first, I didn’t have any idea to write a novel or anything. Rufus sir told me to write something and at that moment i thought, why should i not write a novel? First, I promised him a date–I will finish my writing within 1 September. I just have only three months, I guess. I don’t know how many days it will take for a novel, I know nothing. I don’t even have a single line to write. At first I promised him the date and I went home and I didn't think about that. I just started to play video games, okay. I usually play a lot of video games, that’s the thing.  And I get inspiration from those video games. The game is Mafia I: Definitive Edition. I love the game, so I wanted to write a novel based on this game. Not copying the exact game, I just wanted to take inspiration from the game. At first I got a single line thread-–the protagonist should die in the end. At that point I started to write the novel and I finished within 40 days.

Q) So what are the challenges you faced in the making of the book?

A: Challenges… I don't feel I have so many challenges in writing because usually I write lots of summaries. In my schooldays itself I write a lot of summaries and for that summary i got scolded by many of our professors, thats the thing*laughs I don’t feel any difficulty in the writing process. What I felt was difficult was to get it ready for the proof-reading process. For proof-reading it took two months. For writing it took just 40 or 35 days. For proof-reading it took two months…i don’t know why it took so long, I think my writing is so bad*laughs that’s why they took a lot of time to rectify it. That’s the challenge I faced. After that I didn't face anything else.

Q) Do you have plans to write any new books in the future?

A: I have lots of ideas. But I don't have the time to write right now. I have already crafted more than eight scripts and I also write poems and I have also published in our college’s Tamil department’s magazine. So I have ideas, but if the time comes, I'll write.

Q) So you have written scripts for plays?

A: My brother used to do short films. He directs and he does everything, editing things and all. Now he is going to do a pilot film, and for that, I will be part of the script writing.

Q) What inspired you to write this book? Was it a person, an idea, or a specific moment in your life or a little bit of everything.

A: I am a blogger, everyday i write blogs and that’s how my journey of writing started. Since my 11th grade, I am into blogging and whenever i am writing i feel like many people ask why don’t i make it a novel. I mean people need to know apart from technology, if you want to make it to the entire global scenario, it should be written in the paper right? So, I didn’t really think that I should write a novel. One incident, like rape survivor’s incident which happened to a doctor and people protested and she didn’t get justice and still the case is on. So I really got shattered after reading all the newspapers…justice was delayed and justice got denied. Because of that I thought why don’t I write a novel. My novel is all about a rape survivor which is infused with fiction. If she won’t get justice in political terms then maybe in fictional terms she might get justice. And I think this should be recorded because our countries political system, if you talk about that, nowadays it is very difficult to get justice because peopleconceal everything, and dreams are getting shattered and there many ambitious girls, just because they are raped, their lives get shattered. Many people don’t know what rape survivors face. So, after reading all those news and incidents, i thought of infusing those and making it into a novel.

Q) So what are the challenges you faced in the making of the book?

A: Firstly, I actually made a skeleton of the novel and I started to write. But then, certain words were being repeated again and again. And when I proof-read that I have repeated so much, I had to change it. So that was a bit challenging, I had to find new words. And secondly, publishing. It was a bit hard to find a good publisher, especially online. The publisher didn’t speak to me even in telephonic conversation; everything was in online mode. And the payment details, yea you just get the 10% of it, that’s it. But I wanted to order more books, but he didn’t reply properly. So, I was a bit dissatisfied with that. Talking about writing, I repeatedly use certain phrases and my ideas were getting repeated, so I had to go through it and change it again and again. I had to make sure that the story is engaging and gripping right? So, it was a bit challenging.

Q) Do you have plans to write any new books in the future?

A: I am planning to write a new book. I have designed the skeleton of it. I don’t want to reveal the title, it’s about a cancer survivor, so it’s a novel.
