BOOK REVIEW - 'nowhere to call HOME' by Tenzin Tsundue

Writer: Anagha AnilAnagha Anil

The word that comes to mind when I think about this book is 'Unique'. Not just for it's content, but the circumstance in which I bought it, the life of the author and the material with which it was made.

I bought this book directly from the author for just 50 rupees when he visited us in our third year of UG to talk about poetry and resistance. The Tibetan cause was introduced to us and the session was forever etched in my mind. Thanks to this book, I can go back to it whenever, to get a glimpse of the authentic and purposeful life led by its author, Tenzing Tsundue.

The book is a collection of essays, short-stories, a poem and an interview transcript that is written in simple yet captivating language. The description of places, things and food in an authentic, Tibetan perspective give readers a fresh experience. He talks about refugee life, the challenges they face, the dreams they cherish and their resilience in fighting for their motherland. Geopolitical scenarios, globalization, consumerism, and the COVID -19 pandemic are also dealt with here.

I'm awed by how beautifully the author has incorporated anecdotes, blending humour and seriousness, to convey clear and convincing messages for a noble cause through sustainable means. Yes, sustainable means, for, the book is printed on "eco-friendly recycled newsprint, with handmade paper for cover and bound with two stitches along the centre" (taken from the back cover of the book). On top of that, it is sold at a meagre amount for affordability, despite the author's dependence on it to meet his needs!

He says : " I sell my books, and that pays for my food and travel. Although my income is small, my expenses are even smaller. I live a simple and minimalized, need-based life. I live in two sets of clothes. My friends think i have only one, but in fact I have two. I wear them in turns"

To me, this book is a lesson on purposeful action and I sincerely hope the author and his people get to fulfill their dreams 🙏
